This recipe marks the wedding of Alex, John's son, and Esperanza, Pedro's daughter. This also marks the differences between Pedro and John. They had gotten in a fight together, for Tita. It had been a year since Rosaura passed away. While John was saying goodbye to Tita, Tita couldn't explain his odd behavior. "John thought he was so civilized---he'd teach him what a man does when he really loves a woman," (Esquivel, 231). In John's defense, he just wanted to say his last goodbyes. He knew that Pedro and Tita were finally going to be together, forever. He wanted to show some dominance, what men like to do often.
