A major theme in this story was tradition. Tita was bound in such a terrible tradition of being a chaste guardian. This story teaches that tradition is not important to a lifestyle. No one would be harmed if the tradition was not follow. Unfortunately, Rosaura and Mama Elena begged to differ. Mama Elena convinced Pedro to marry Rosaura instead of Tita because of this.
Another theme that this story encompasses is independence. This tradition gave Tita a sense of independence. It helped her become more outspoken which helped her prove her point that tradition is not key. This theme of independence ties back to tradition. In a way, they could be interchanged.
