September: Chocolate and Three Kings' Day Bread
- 2 pounds Soconusco chocolate beans
- 2 pounds Maracaibo chocolate beans
- 2 pounds Caracas chocolate beans
- 4-6 pounds sugar, to taste
This recipe marks an important day in most Mexican people's lives, Three Kings Day. While making this dish, Tita was longing for her childhood, where she didn't have problems at all. She mainly missed Nacha, the woman who took care of her. "Those happy days when Nacha was with her seemed so distant now. Nacha! The smalls: her noodle soup, her chilaquiles, her champurrado, her molcajete sauce, her bread with cream, all were far away in a distant past," (Esquivel, 167). This quote shows Tita reflecting on her childhood which she dearly misses. Once again, she relates to the smell of certain food with her child hood.
